Update your computer

You need to update your software for optimal computer security.

  1. Operating system

Updating your computer operating system is very important. Most computer attacks occur on computers that don't have the most recent security updates.

Make sure your operating system is up to date with the latest supported version, and then activate the automatic updates.

If you have any question, contact your operating system support center.

In addition to updating the operating system, it's just as important to make sure that your computer's software is updated regularly.

  2. Browser

Make sure you have the latest updates, including security content:

Note: These software updates are not hosted on the Desjardins site. They can be found on the manufacturer's website. .

In any case, activate automatic updates if the option is available for your browser. Also be sure to disable the auto complete feature that stores and automatically enters your passwords in the browsers you use.

  3. Plugins

Plug-ins (complimentary applications for web browsers) have to be updated:

Note: These software updates are not hosted on the Desjardins site. They can be found on the manufacturer's website.

In each case, activate automatic updates for your plug-ins.

Take security measures

Install security software

It's crucial that you install security software on your computer as well as:

  • Antivirus software
  • Anti-spyware software
  • Anti-spam software

Make sure the following functions are enabled:

  • Automatic updates
  • Auto scan
  • Heuristic analysis to help detect unknown threats

Use a firewall

A firewall is a security unit that keeps people from taking control of your PC. Make sure that your operating system firewall is enabled or that your antivirus software allows for firewalls.

Keep watch

In addition to setting up your computer with the correct security measures, you have to keep watch for any unusual browser behaviour when using Desjardins online services.

For example, you may have a virus if you're asked for any unusual information when you log in (date of birth, SIN), even though:

  • the website address is correct (www.desjardins.com or accesd.desjardins.com)
  • the padlock at the bottom of the page is locked
  • the address begins with https://

In any case:

  • Don't access a website if your browser alerts you that the digital certificate isn't valid.
  • Don't open files from people you don't now and don't accept macros from sources you don't now. Beware of files with the following extensions: .exe, .bat, vbs, .pif. When in doubt, contact the person who sent it to you to make sure the file is legitimate.
  • Pay attention to security software notifications. If you get a message saying you're in the process of downloading or opening a malicious file, cancel the operation.

Test your knowledge and your web security behaviour by taking the quiz.
