As part of the science and robotics competition courses for Secondary 1, 2 and 3 at Collège St-Bernard, we wanted to develop a project to integrate robotics into our science classes, and we wanted it to be something that would get our students to work together. Our project is to make a self-running greenhouse using probes that are connected to robots.

The greenhouse is a project for our grade levels. Secondary 1 students will grow microgreens. Secondary 2 students will grow herbs, and Secondary 3 students will grow tomato plants.

Basically, our part in the project is to build the greenhouse and seed all the plants. We have to maintain the plants, which means watering them and making sure they have everything they need. We also need to program things like temperature, humidity and pH probes.

This project lets us dig deeper into the topics we’re studying in our regular science classes. Secondary 1 students are going to take a really close look at pH. Secondary 2 students will look at water retention in soil and germination. Secondary 3 will learn new building techniques. It also means we get to work together, no matter what grade level we’re in, and share information and results to move the project forward.
